Revolution controller not a gimmick

Quite often, the notion is passed around the web that Nintendo’s next-generation console will be nothing more than a gimmick. The most recent revelation about Nintendo’s upcoming Revolution console is the controller’s design. However, this particular piece of the puzzle has many people saying that they’re not convinced.

NR controller

It is clear that Nintendo believes that change begins, and ends, with the controller. Allow a bit of retrospection: Nintendo has been doing controllers right since they released the Famicom in Japan over 20 years ago. Yes, Nintendo was the first to make the jump from one-button paddles to multi-button controllers.

It completely changed the way we played games. Not only could we jump, but we could jump and change our speed.

After this, Nintendo took another leap of faith and introduced us to the world of analog controllers. This meant that we were no longer bound by the constraint of the control pad. We could tip-toe; we could sprint. All with one control stick.

Nintendo also introduced the world to wireless controllers. Decent wireless controllers, to be exact.

And now, Nintendo sees fit to change the way the world plays video games with the Revolution’s unique, gyroscopic remote-styled controller. There is nothing gimmicky about it - it will bring gaming to a new level.
