Console Shape: Concave vs Convex
With all the comparisons being made between the features and specs of the upcoming Revolution, PlayStation 3 and XBox 360, it would be a refreshing change to focus on the most obvious difference between them. Have you noticed that the PS3 is convex in shape while the XBox 360 is concave?
Microsoft and Sony have decided to face off by defining their next-generation consoles by their shape. According to the Microsoft designers, the concave shape represents an intake of breath as if the machine itself is excited. Maybe this means that the PlayStation 3 is breathing out.
One disadvantage to both shapes is that they don’t fit nicely with other home theater components - the curves mean that you can’t stack anything on top of them. Maybe this is Microsoft and Sony’s way of ensuring that their video games console is the center piece of your living room.
Nintendo, however, has provided the perfect middleground solution. Their Revolution console has no curves at all:
The Revolution, PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles can all either stand upright or be laid on their sides, although it appears that only the Revolution will stack well with other home theater components due to its lack of curves.
