Revolution specs: First rumors

A forum poster claiming to be a Factor 5 employee has allegedly leaked details of the Nintendo Revolution’s technical specifications. Adding credibility to the leaked specs is the fact that the same source published correct Xbox 360 specs prior to their release by Microsoft.

Revolution console

Initial posts suggested that Nintendo was working on two systems - known as “System 1″ and “System 2″ - concurrently, and would ultimately choose one to bring to market. It now appears that what may end up on retailers’ shelves could be a modified version of System 1.

The specs we currently have to hand read as follows:

CPU 1 dual-threaded IBM Custom PowerPC 2.5 GHz with 256 KB L1 cache and 1 MB of L2 cache (an L3 cache is also rumored). The CPU can perform 13 billion dot product operations per second.
GPU ATI Custom based RN520 core. The GPU core will run at 600 MHz, and will support up to 2048×1268 resolution. The GPU will have 256 MB of 1T-SRAM.
Polygon performance 500 million triangles per second theoretical. The average in game would be around 100 million/sec.
Shader performance ~50 billion shader operations per second.
Memory 512 MB of 700 MHz 1T-SRAM

As well as the above specs, the Revolution will support a PPU chip (Physical Processing Chip). This chip will have 32 MB of its own RAM, and will link to the CPU, GPU and controller.

There will also be a separate sound card that will support only DD 5.1 – DTS 7.1. This sound card will have 16 MB of onboard RAM.

It was initially thought that the Nintendo Revolution would not support high-definition gaming, however, these latest reports indicate that Nintendo is still undecided on whether or not to support HD.
