Nintendo Revolution to have built-in parental control system

Nintendo has announced that their next-generation Revolution console will come pre-installed with a parental control system. By activating the password controlled censorship program, parents will be able to manage the maximum game rating that their console will play.

The settings can be changed or disabled at any time by re-entering the password.

The system will be based on the ESRB (E, E10+, T, M or AO) ratings system in the US and the PEGI (3+, 7+, 12+, 16+ or 18+) ratings system in the UK.

Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Nintendo Reggie Fils-Aime believes that including the parental control software will make families feel more comfortable about buying the Nintendo Revolution console:

“Even though many Nintendo games are rated E, E10+ or T, we believe this kind of feature should be included in the hardware. It’s the right thing to do.

Game ratings are on the front and back of every game package, so families can easily make a decision about whether a game is right for them.”

The play control system is activated by a code on the games that indicates its rating and determines if it can be used. It will be similar to the one Microsoft has installed in the Xbox 360.

The decision to include a parental control feature in the upcoming Revolution console may be an indication that Nintendo is aiming to develop more mature games for the Revolution than it has for past consoles.

The Nintendo Revolution is set to be released sometime next year.
