Revolution 2.5 times more powerful than GameCube: developers

Nintendo’s upcoming Revolution console will be approximately 2.5 times more powerful than its current generation GameCube, according to third party developers with access to Nintendo’s Revolution hardware documentation.

Developers in the know about the Revolution’s specs have revealed details regarding the next-generation console’s estimated power.

The Revolution will be powered by an IBM chip codenamed “Broadway”, and an ATI graphics chip codenamed “Hollywood”. According to developers, the Broadway CPU is similar in design to the GameCube’s Gekko CPU, but runs at roughly double the clock speed and is tipped to provide two to three times the Gekko’s power.

Less is known about the console’s Hollywood graphics chip, with one senior developer commenting to GamesIndustry.biz,

“We have theoretical throughput figures and stats from Nintendo, but nobody’s seen the hardware yet - we’re just treating it like it’s a faster version of the GameCube GPU, at the moment.”

With one developer likening the Revolution to “a souped-up Xbox”, it appears that Nintendo is aiming to capture an entirely different sector of the next-gen gaming market than rivals Sony and Microsoft.

Nintendo’s recent refusal to release official hardware specifications for the console may also suggest that the company is looking to attract consumers based on innovation rather than simply raw power.

Developers have also commented that development times for Revolution games will likely be quite short, with one developer stating that,

“You can basically treat it like a current generation machine. The time it’ll take to ramp up to developing on this is basically nil - we can just work on a PC or maybe an Xbox, and then improve the quality of our assets when we move to the Revolution. Or even work on a Cube, in fact. The libraries are very similar.”

The Revolution’s modest hardware specifications have prompted speculation that the console could have a price tag of US $149 or less.

These specs are based on outdated developer kits that did not include Broadway or Hollywood. The real Rev is more in line with the 360.
