In comments made to Yahoo! Japan, Iwata said that the Revolution would be in a different price range to its major competitors.

As the cost for the PS3 is predicted to be around $399, gamers can expect the Revolution to be released for less than US $299, which is the price for the standard Xbox 360 package.

Iwata gave no indication towards the pricing of software and accessories for the Revolution.

The Nintendo President’s comments have confirmed predictions from developers that the Revolution would be cheaper than Microsoft and Sony’s next-gen consoles.

With costs of production and parts reported to be much less than its competitors’ more powerful machines, it comes as no surprise that the price of the Revolution will be lower than that of the PS3 and Xbox 360.

There is speculation that the Revolution could be launched with a price tag of just $149, which would make it much more affordable and appealing to parents and gamers who can’t afford or refuse to pay the expected $399 for a Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 premium package.

With Nintendo keeping the Revolution’s capabilities a secret, gamers and critics alike will eagerly await further announcements related to its specifications and price.

Iwata’s recent comments are another indication that Nintendo is aiming to market their next-generation console in a different manner to Microsoft and Sony. Rather than focussing on power and graphics, Nintendo is pursuing innovation and approachability as its main selling points.

The dramatic paradigm shift in gaming as promised by the novel controller is risky, but if it proves successful, it may well help Nintendo re-establish itself as an industry leader.
